Memorial to an 1848 Brick Lighthouse
This brick structure at Cape Canaveral, Florida, is known only from buried brick ruins, a few National Archives photos, historic maps and other meager records. The original tower stood 65 ft. tall, was not high enough to provide adequate light and warning to ships. A taller, iron structure was built next to it in 1868. In 1893 the iron tower began to be disassembled and the brick tower was destroyed with materials to be reused in the reconstruction and moving of the iron tower to a new (present-day) location that was better protected inland from beach erosion. The new site was operational by 1894. What remained of the foundation footing for the 1868 iron tower and the dispersed brick ruins of the c.1847-48 tower are all that remain at the old lightstations. Our archaeological work re-discovered the ruins and laser scanning of the site and this monument was performed. This nearby memorial was made by an Eagle Scout from a local scout troop in 2002 using scavenged bricks from the original lighthouse.

HTMLText_569AB344_466A_683D_41B2_86E9C36AAF12.html = Launch Complex 5/6 Spin Test Facility
The Launch Complex 5/6 Spin Test Facility (BRO3052) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, was built in 1952 for fuel disposal and modified in 1956 for “spin testing” rockets and missiles, such as spinning components horizontally and/or vertically to detect defects in balance that could cause flight instability problems. The LC 5/6 Spin Test Facility has a direct Cold War relationship with U.S. manned and unmanned missile programs, the development of submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM), and the launch of scientific and communication satellites. 3D point cloud from terrestrial laser scanning survey program by the University of South Florida, Center for Digital Heritage and Geospatial Information.
HTMLText_56191653_466A_68DA_41A6_E765ED0A0194.html = Observation Pit
Assigned today as Facility 41302 and the Ordnance Storage Building (Florida Master Site File no. 8BR3055), this structure was originally identified as the Observation Pit when it was constructed concurrently with the Spin Test Building, Facility 1221 in 1956, the structure is located near the center of the LC-5/6 Spin Test Facility. The concrete foundation pad and poured concrete walls are protected on the northwest, northeast, and southwest sides by earthen revetments. Over its history, the structure has been assigned several, sometimes puzzling, names. From 1957 to 1959 the building was known as the Speed Rocket Building, and from 1960 to 1962 it was used as the Missile Research Test Shop. Throughout these periods, however, it continued to be unofficially identified as the Observation Pit. In 1963, it became a Systems Capsule Laboratory and in 1977 it became an Ordnance Storage Building-Spin Test, and in 1992 the name was changed again to the Ordnance Storage Building.
HTMLText_5632A945_466A_983E_41C4_7AD00BED1D4C.html = Payload Holding Building
Facility 41301-Payload Holding Building (8BR3054) - This structure was a later addition to the Spin Test Facility. Built in 1963, the square-shaped, single-story building has a concrete slab foundation with poured concrete walls and is covered with a poured concrete slab roof. It is enclosed on the northeast, southeast, and northwest elevations by earthen revetments that rise to the top of the structure. A wooden stairway leads up the southeast side to a gravel coated roof deck. There are a pair of two-part metal slab doors that are the only entrance to the building. When constructed in 1963, the structure was identified as the Propulsion Laboratory, In 1979, it became the Payload Holding Building-Spin Test until 1991, and then the Payload Holding Building from 1992 - 1998. During this time records indicate it was used for missile research and testing with a period under the control of the U.S. Navy.
HTMLText_562AFBF8_466A_9FD6_41C5_934DC54711FF.html = Sentry House
Facility 41303 is a metal Quonset hut that was built in 1960 to serve as office space and a shop during the human crewed Project Mercury missions, the United States’ first man-in-space program. Throughout its tenure, the structure served as office, shop, and storage, most recently for the Space Force Museum’s collection of items from the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse. Adjacent to the Quonset hut is a small, steel plated storage structure identified as a Paint and Oil Locker, Facility 41307. This building dates to 1995 and is not historic.
HTMLText_4B84D997_459A_F85A_41AC_B7921EEF64A4.html = Sentry House
The Sentry House, Facility 40135, is not the original guard building at the LC 5-6 Spin Test Facility at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. It was added when the U.S. Navy used the complex as a storage facility and is considered not historically contributing to the site and is less than 50 years old. The small wood structure is anchored on a poured concrete slab adjacent to the of the site’s east access road and gate.
HTMLText_56A294EB_466A_69CA_41C0_8A9D56D8288B.html = Spin Test Building
8BR3053 (aka Facility 1221), is the Spin Test Building that is part of the LC5-6 Spin Test Facility at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The structure has gone through several name changes and missions over the years since its construction, originally built in 1956 as the Spin Test Building. The primary entrance was through a pair of tall metal doors on the structure’s northwest side that allowed for the ingress and egress of missile motors, parts, and satellites for spin testing. On the southeast side an opening 10 feet from the ground surface at the center of the building, allowed observation of the interior from mirrors mounted in an Observation Pit. The facility continued as a spin test and research testing structure for NASA’s Lunar Orbiter program until the program ended in 1968, and the site then reverted to the Air Force and was used as an artifact storage facility for the Air Force Space and Missile Museum.
