Apache Dancer Carving

Faintly carved on the east coquina wall in Casement Room 15 is historic graffiti relating to Native American internment at the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument. The carving, digitized using structured light laser scanning and imaging, is that of an Apache Fire Spirit. An Apache prisoner carved this work in 1886. The Fire Dance was a sacred ceremony performed to help cure disease or for protection. In 1886, 500 Chiricahua Apaches were brought to the fort and imprisoned for more than a year here. Most prisoners were women and children and the ceremonial graffiti carvings in this room suggest a form of social memory and teaching. Although today the carving is hard to discern, we have used digital tracing to highlight carved surfaces in an effort to better see the traces of the past left behind.

Historic Graffiti

Historic graffiti at the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument in St. Augustine, Florida often contains dates, names, and regiment information for enlisted persons from the fort’s past. This casement room has a number of areas of enlisted graffiti, including this spot near the doorway between the Casement 15 and Casement 14 passage. In this example, note the word Mis for Mississippi- likely where the person’s regiment is from, and an 1888 date with “Woodbury” as a possible surname.

Hidden Details in Casement 21

Casement 21 – Governor’s Fore Room – This highly decorative room is where the Governor conducted siege response and war council meetings. During the late 18th Century this room became quarters for the St. Augustine artillery company. Walls in this room were brightly colored with alternating half circles of red and yellow frescoes. Our 3D scanning and photographic documentation shows more clearly how these walls were decorated, and how they were covered with a whitewash and color band designs using iron oxide red and ochre yellow pigments in a plaster known as argamasa

Casement Room 17 Wall

Casement Room 17 at the Castillo de San Marcos- known as The King’s Coffer-Treasury Room - this room was used in the 18th Century by the Spanish to secure pay chests, important documents and valuables. In the 19th Century the room was used as a U.S. Army supply room. The granite half wall at the door was constructed in the 1840s after a request from the Quartermaster, stopping soldiers from entering the room beyond this point. The walls in this room exihibit areas of historic pigment and graffiti left from various times in the Castillo’s history. Some markings are related to plaster applications and structural modifications and not necessarily from intentional graffiti.

Kiowa Sun Dance Carving

On the west wall of Casement 15 at the Castillo de San Marcos is an area that contains historic graffiti incised into the coquina and plaster by Kiowa Plains Indians who were incarcerated at the National Monument. The graffiti likely dates to around 1870 and its faint lines have faded and have been impacted by moisture and surface spalling over the years. Our 3D laser scanning and imaging of these carvings are used like a map of the wall to assist managers in knowing thhe extent and condition of the carvings and our 3D models and renders are utilized by the National Park Service as part of conservation and interpretation efforts at the site.

Ship Graffiti

Casement Room 7, Castillo de San Marcos, St. Augustine Florida

The historic ship graffiti in this area is drawn using charcoal and is faint and hard to detect. Our use of decorrelation stretch image enhancement techniques in combination with high resolution imaging and 3D laser scanning, is helping the National Park Service map and delineate these important stories that are scratched, carved and drawn on the walls of thhis National Monument.

YBK enhancement is used here to bring out subtle differences in hue that allows researches to see more of the traces of charcoal used in this drawing.

Historic Mystery Graffiti

The east wall in Room 28 of the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument in St. Augustine, Florida, contains a rich amount of historic graffiti. The room housed Spanish soldiers who lived in town with their families and worked in the fort on 24-to-48 hour shifts. Soldiers on duty rested in the Guardrooms. Stories told through historic carvings and writings on the walls relate to ships that the men may have had association with or represent their artistic expression. Writings that can typically be found on the walls include names or initials, alphabet letters, and dates. While these drawings and writings can be found in numerous places on the fort walls, the east wall of room 28 has a number of ship drawings and other historic carvings of note. What can you find? HINT- you can digitally remove the color from the wall by selecting a Matcap Render available on the settings tool in the bottom right corner. Removing the color can allow better viewing of carved details.

200-Year-Old Graffiti

Ships and letters carved on east wall in Casement Room 28 of the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument. These British ships are carved in an area high on the wall and not easily viewed. Along with the 200-year-old ship graffiti drawings you will notice alphabet letters where soldiers likely practiced their writing. Some letters are backwards, likely due to many soldiers being illiterate. Numerous areas of letter writing practice can be found on the walls were soldiers stayed, pointing to their pursuit of learning how to read and write during their time at the Castillo.
