Musketball
from Historic Homestead Site

Musketballs, made of lead, were used with muzzle-loading long guns with a flint- striking ignition mechanism. These type of long guns were common in the 17th, 18th, and 19th Century. This artifact was recovered near a known historic homesite near Maximo Point, Florida, and could have been used in hunting activities relating to the nearby historic settlement.

Musketballs are often encountered as historic archaeological material remains at sites, but have been often relegated to collections without an analyses or much in the way of examination. Using 3D documentation, these types of artifacts can be more readily seen and digitally explored to allow for comparisons, surface examiniation, and measurement, opening new potentials for archaeological research and understanding. Using the sketchfab platform, the public can also participate in the exploration of the past.

Weeden Island Punctated Ceramic Vessel Sherd

This Weeden Island Punctated rim sherd is a classic example of this ceramic type. It dates to the Weeden Island period, ca. AD 400-900 and is a small piece of what would have been a large pot that was likely used in a mortuary context. The punctated design is made by pressing the edge of a pointed tool into the wet clay before firing.

The Weeden Island pottery series, which includes several different types was originally defined by Gordon Willey for the Florida Gulf Coast and was named after the Weeden Island site, 8Pi1, in Pinellas County, Florida.

This sherd is unprovenienced, meaning that it lacks any information about what site it is from. This decorative sherd is used as part of a teaching collection to allow hands-on study and analyses of archaeological materials.
